Holistic Health: Why Your Well-Being Is About More Than Diet and Exercise

FacebookPinLinkedIn

Health Is About More Than What We Eat and How Much We Exercise

A happy, healthy life is about more than the food we eat or the amount of exercise we get. Our overall well-being is also shaped by our relationships, careers, dreams, goals, and spirituality….just to name a few aspects of life.

It’s about who we are, what we love, and what gives our lives meaning.

We can eat well and exercise regularly, yet still feel something is missing when other important areas of our lives aren’t getting the attention they need.

Because it’s not just our bodies that need nourishment. We do, too.

“Just as food is needed for the body, love is needed for the soul.” – from A Sudden Clash of Thunder by Osho, an Indian spiritual teacher and meditation guide.

What Are You Really Hungry For? The Connection Between Food and Fulfillment

Sometimes, we’re nourished by more than what’s on our plates. In the holistic wellness framework taught by the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the term primary foods refers to the aspects of life that nourish us beyond what we eat, such as relationships, meaningful work, creativity, and spirituality. The food we eat is referred to as secondary food because it provides physical nourishment.

Both matter, but food alone can’t meet all our needs for connection, purpose, joy, and fulfillment.

We hunger for play, fun, touch, romance, intimacy, love, achievement, success, art, music, self-expression, leadership, excitement, adventure, and spirituality. All these elements are essential forms of nourishment, and the extent to which we are able to incorporate them determines how enjoyable and worthwhile our lives feel.

When we regularly turn to food to cope with stress, loneliness, boredom, or unmet emotional needs, it may provide temporary comfort without addressing what’s missing. For some people, this pattern can affect their relationship with food and contribute to eating habits that don’t support their overall well-being.

Over time, this pattern can make it harder to recognize what we truly need.

“If you’re not getting the primary food you need, eating all the food in the world won’t satisfy your hunger.”~ Joshua Rosenthal, founder of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition

How Life Gets Out of Balance

When life seems hectic, your energy is typically focused in all different directions; it’s easy to find yourself off balance, not paying enough attention to the needed or desired areas of your life.

Many of us are stressed out and running around in circles, never taking the time to take inventory of where we are and where we want to go. Years go by and one day we find ourselves asking, “How did I get HERE?”

That’s why it can be useful to make the time to take a look at your life….step back a bit and see things objectively, considering each area of your life to assess what might be off balance. You can then look at the areas that need more attention and take notice of the areas that are feeding you and for which you are grateful.

The good news is that we don’t have to change everything overnight. Sometimes, the first step toward feeling better is simply pausing long enough to recognize what’s working, what’s missing, and where we’d like to make a change.

Once you’ve identified the areas that need attention, it’s time to plan the action steps to regain balance, reduce stress, and feel more fulfilled so you can truly enjoy your life.

Make a commitment to these actions by writing them down once you have set your goals in place.

Ready?

Time to Evaluate: How Nourished Is Your Life?

Rate Your Life: A Personal Check-In

Take a few minutes to consider the different areas of your life and how satisfied or fulfilled you feel in each one right now.

Using a scale of 1–10, with 10 meaning “It couldn’t be better!” and 1 meaning “This really needs attention,” give each area a rating based on how you feel today.

You can jot down your scores on a piece of paper or simply reflect on them as you go.

  • Spirituality: How connected do you feel to your beliefs, values, or sense of purpose?
  • Creativity: Do you have opportunities to explore your creativity and express yourself?
  • Finances: How satisfied are you with your current financial situation?
  • Career: Does your work provide satisfaction, purpose, or a sense of accomplishment?
  • Learning and Personal Growth: Are you continuing to learn, grow, and explore new interests?
  • Overall Health: How do you feel about your physical and emotional well-being?
  • Movement and Exercise: Are you getting the movement your body needs and enjoys?
  • Nutrition: Are your eating habits supporting your health and helping you feel your best?
  • Home Environment: Does your home feel comfortable, supportive, and enjoyable?
  • Relationships: Do your relationships provide connection, support, and fulfillment?
  • Social Life: Do you have enough opportunities for friendship, fun, and social connection?
  • Joy: How much room do you make for the things that bring you happiness?

Reflecting on Your Results: What Is Your Life Telling You?

Now, take a step back and look at your ratings as a whole.

Which areas of your life feel most fulfilling? Where are you feeling satisfied and well-nourished? Are there areas that could use more attention?

Remember, this isn’t about achieving a perfect 10 in every area of your life. It’s about becoming more aware of what matters to you, recognizing what’s already working, and identifying where you’d like to make a change.

Your ratings are simply a starting point for understanding what you need and what might help you feel more balanced and fulfilled.

What Areas of Your Life Are Feeding You?

Now that you’ve taken a closer look at your life, consider what truly nourishes you. Which activities, relationships, and experiences leave you feeling happy, energized, connected, or fulfilled? What would you like to make more room for?

We all want loving relationships, meaningful work, optimal health, laughter, joy, adventure, fun and purpose. When we can focus on what truly makes us happy and fulfills us, and we’re doing what we love to do most of the time, everything else seems to fall into place much easier.

What is it that feeds YOU? What do you love doing or look forward to the most? When are you the most: happy, energized, balanced, at peace, joyful, fulfilled, etc.?

Pause and Reflect: What Truly Nourishes You?

Think about what that is for you and how you can create that.

For the areas of your life that were below 8, what are some ideas you have to feel more satisfied and complete?

Journal your thoughts, ideas, and realizations if you want to.

Choosing Where to Begin: Small Changes, Meaningful Results

In the journal space that follows, identify one area that is not providing you the nourishment you want or need and with improvement, would have the biggest impact on your life. You may identify several areas you’d like to improve, but you don’t have to tackle them all at once.

Which area would be the easiest to start with where a small realistic change could make a meaningful difference for improving your happiness and life balance?

Sample questions to help you get started:

Career: What makes you unhappy in your current career? What needs to change to possibly make it better?

Finances: In what way could your finances be better? How can you make a plan for that? (Brainstorm some ideas)

Health: What do you really want for your health? In what ways do you need to take better care of yourself and what does that look like? (Be very specific)

Relationships: What would you most like to see change? (family, friends, spouse, children, coworkers, etc.)

Home Environment: What would you like to change in your home environment? Do you need more help from family members? Are there repairs that need to be made? What can you start with?

Looking Beyond the Scale: What Are You Really Searching For?

Sometimes our search for the ideal number on the scale isn’t about the number at all. Sometimes it’s about finding that which will nourish us on a much deeper level and makes us feel complete, loved, and part of something much bigger.

Maybe you aren’t quite sure what that is for you right now, and that’s okay. Don’t give up being curious, and continue searching. Sometimes just being open to new possibilities can open doors you would’ve never thought of.

“In the midst of our struggle to find out who we are, there are infinite possibilities for beauty, and hope and wonder and love.” ~ Mandy Hale, self-empowerment author

I love this reminder that uncertainty doesn’t necessarily mean we’re lost. Sometimes, not knowing exactly who we are or where we’re headed is simply part of discovering who we’re becoming.

Your Next Steps: Creating a Life That Nourishes You

You don’t have to change everything at once. Start by identifying what brings you joy, what feels missing, and what small step you can take this week to create more balance in your life.

  • What brings you genuine joy?
  • What nourishes you emotionally or spiritually?
  • How would you like to make more room for these things in your life?
  • Which area of your life would you most like to nurture first
  • What’s one small action you can take this week to experience more joy or fulfillment?

You don’t have to have everything figured out to begin creating a healthier, more fulfilling life. Start by paying attention to what nourishes you, recognizing what may be missing, and taking one small step toward the life you want to live. Sometimes, the most important changes begin with simply asking yourself what you truly need.

Sometimes, recognizing what needs to change is the easy part. Knowing where to begin and how to make lasting changes can be more challenging. Working with a holistic health coach can help you identify your priorities, establish meaningful goals, and develop sustainable lifestyle habits that support your overall well-being.
